The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Hours are Tuesday and Wednesday, April 14-15, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Thursday, April 16, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Located in the Marlo Room (second floor) of Lafayette’s Farinon College Center, the Ability Exhibit will be staffed by students and faculty/staff to assist with the interactive exhibit. The exhibit may qualify for intercultural competency credit.

During the opening Monday, April 13, 4-6 p.m., remarks will be given by Robin Rinehart, dean of the faculty.

Sponsored by the family of Lafayette alum Jim Cosgrove ’86 and hosted by Disability Services/ATTIC at Lafayette, The Ability Exhibit uses a multimedia approach and offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators with:

  • Interactive activities such as Ability IQ computer quizzes and The Space Rope
  • Videos and slides, posters about people with disabilities, the disability movement and more
  • Banners with historical facts and statistics

Evolving from a class project into a sophisticated exhibit, Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit debuted at SLU in October 2010 and has traveled internationally from Missouri to states such as Oregon, Washington, Vermont, and Ohio.

Universities, companies, and other organizations interested in a multimedia approach to raising disability awareness in a respectful and comfortable setting host the exhibit to help students and staff start on the path of becoming disability allies and educators. The Ability Exhibit ships to a site, complete with instructions for setting up and hosting it in a variety of educational venues and spaces. Once the exhibit is finished, host sites pack it up and send it back.

An award winning program, The Ability Exhibit has garnered the 2012 Ignatian Medal of Outstanding Campus Program, awarded by the Jesuit Association for Student Personnel Administrators; the 2012-13 AAUW Community Action Grant, awarded by the American Association of University Women and the 2013 ACPA Outstanding Program Award, sponsored by the American College Personnel Association Commission for Student Involvement.
