In observance of the International Day of Peace, Lafayette College is presenting a talk by Nick Mottern, director of the Know Drones Tour, on Friday, Sept. 21 at noon in the Marlow Room of Farinon Student Center.

Mottern’s talk “Peace One Day: Know the Drones” will be accompanied by a mock 8-foot long drone, a weapon used by the U.S. military to kill militants in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia and other countries in what some believe is a violation of international law and against the U.S. Constitution.

The drone has a unique role because unlike any other weapon, it can monitor the lives of individuals and groups for days and kill by remote control at a moment’s notice.

The use of drones strikes at the heart of this year’s elections because they’re often deployed to oil-rich countries by industrialized nations, says organizer Katalin Fabian, an associate professor of government and law.

“Issues of foreign policy and renewable resources are central points of contention in the presidential election,” says Fabian, whose First-Year Seminar “Nonviolence: Theory and Practice” is sponsoring Lafayette’s participation in the Know Drones Tour, along with the Landis Community Outreach Center.

In addition, the College’s Interfaith Council will be holding events from 9 a.m. to noon at the Interfaith Chapel in Hogg Hall. Different groups are sponsoring prayer stations and visitors can write notes to elected officials in support of peace.

The Know Drones Tour, with stops in Bethlehem and Quakertown, is organized by the Lehigh-Pocono Committee of Concern (LEPOCO).

International Peace Day is a United Nations initiative to encourage governments to find peaceful solutions to conflicts.
