Enthralling audiences around the world for more than 30 years with its unique fusion of Afro-Brazilian movements, contemporary dance and Capoeira, a dance/martial arts form that evolved in colonial Brazil as a means of fighting enslavement, DanceBrazil will perform at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3 at Lafayette College’s Williams Center for the Arts, 317 Hamilton St.
Tickets are $22 and can be purchased by calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009 weekdays from noon to 2 p.m., 4 to 5 p.m. and one hour before the show.
The company’s much anticipated return to the Williams Center features artistic director and choreographer’s Jelon Vieira’s newest work, Fe do Sertão (Faith of the Sertaons), which thrives on the movements created by the human body, smooth samba steps, and the company’s signature Capoeira kicks, gracefully athletic. Also featured is Banguela (2010), which honors the roots of African culture that define the Afro-Brazilian soul of music and dance.
The New York Times said in a recent review that the performers of DanceBrazil “exist in a ravishing, hard-working paradise. They’re barefoot; their attire (T-shirts, loose trousers, light dresses or skirts) has no hint of luxury. What matters here above all is the gorgeously full physicality of movement, allied to music.”
There will be a 7 p.m. pre-performance talk about the company’s work in room 108 of the Williams Center.
