Acclaimed choreographer David Roussève and his dance theater company, REALITY, will open the Williams Center’s 2014 dance season with their newest work, Stardust, at Lafayette College on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m.

A choreographer, director, writer, dancer and actor, Roussève has become known for experimental dance theater that mines the personal—his own experiences as the grandson of a Creole grandmother, a Princeton undergraduate, a soap opera actor, a gay man in the age of AIDS—to explore universal themes. Many honors and awards have come his way, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, multiple NEA fellowships, and a Bessie award for distinguished achievement in New York theater and dance.

His newest work, Stardust, draws upon the trendy social world of Twitter and texting, exploring the darker side of cyber-bullying through the marginalization of a gay African-American youth overwhelmed by shame and personal struggle—a wondrous journey ending in transcendence, all of it dramatized by beautiful dance and movement theater.

Using the therapeutic powers of dance, abstract urban video imagery, and romantic 1950s ballads, Roussève explores our perennial need for intimacy in a furiously-paced, technology-driven culture.

On Wednesday, Feb. 12 at noon a public forum with choreographer David Roussève and other campus leaders to discuss the themes and impact of Stardust will take place in the Marlo Room of Farinon Center. Lunch is provided.

Tour support for Stardust is provided by grants from the National Dance Project (a program of the New England Foundation for the Arts) and an Arts Connect grant from the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation. Residency and outreach activities are supported a grant from the Dexter and Dorothy Baker Foundation and by the “Choreographers on Campus” Initiative of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
