Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band Present Annual Easton Jazz Festival at Lafayette
Two-time Grammy nominee and Pew Fellow Orrin Evans brings his 17-piece big band to Lafayette’s Williams Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12 for the 28th Annual Easton Jazz Festival in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Easton.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by visiting or calling the Williams Center box office at (610) 330-5009 from noon to 2 p.m., and 4 to 5 p.m. on weekdays, plus one hour before the performance.
Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band will perform standards and original compositions with the propulsive approach to rhythm and harmony that has made Evans a favorite on the jazz scene. A Philadelphia native, Evans has been recognized as one of the most distinctive and inventive pianists of his generation. In a short span of time, he has earned the titles of pianist, composer, bandleader, teacher, producer and arranger.
The latest release by Evans, “It Was Beauty” marks his 20th recording as a leader and his seventh release for the label, Criss Cross, which he began recording for at age 21. In his 20-year plus career, he’s been critically acclaimed for his imposing chops, his propulsive take on rhythm and harmony alike.
Evans’ 17-piece Captain Black Big Band released a self-titled record in 2011 on Posi-Tone and a follow-up record in 2013, culled from shows in Philadelphia and New York. Evans’ greatest joy is producing projects for other artists like Sean Jones, and playing with his own band, which at different times features such notables as Ralph Peterson Jr., Sam Newsome, Ralph Bowen, Nasheet Waits, Reid Anderson, Eric Revis, J.D. Allen, Stacy Dillard and Duane Eubanks.
