Digital Humanities Experts at Lafayette

Neil Fraistat, director of the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities (MITH) and professor of English at the University of Maryland, will join Lafayette President Alison Byerly and Paul Barclay, chair of the Mellon DH Steering Committee and associate professor of history, for a panel discussion, “Putting the Teacher-Scholar Ideal into Practice: A Liberal Arts College Model for Digital Humanities,” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 in the Kirby Hall of Civil Rights auditorium, room 104.

At noon, Oct. 1, Fraistat will talk about on the role of digital humanities at the University of Maryland in Skillman Library, room 4.

The events are free and open to the public.

The three panelists will lead a discussion about the role of digital humanities in the future of liberal arts education, focusing on how a community of practice at Lafayette College is unifying teaching and research with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s digital humanities grant and in partnership with the Library’s Digital Scholarship Services. The panel will also address the challenges and opportunities presented by longer-term commitments to digital scholarship from the perspective of institutions and individual teacher-scholars.

President Byerly is a leading voice on emerging forms of digital scholarship, the changing role of the humanities in the digital age, the importance of curricular innovation, and MOOCs (massively open online courses).

Digital humanities is an area of research and teaching at the intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities. It currently incorporates both digitized and born-digital materials and combines the methodologies from traditional humanities disciplines and social sciences with tools provided by computing and digital publishing.
